Das Salzbergwerk befindet sich in der Tennengauer Bezirkshauptstadt Hallein und war bislang als Salzbergwerk Hallein bekannt. Der neue Name wurde gewählt, um die Lage des Bergwerks im Land Salzburg sowie dessen Bedeutung für die Stadt Salzburg hervorzuheben und den Bergwerkstourismus anzukurbeln. Bad Dürrnberg ist eine Katastralgemeinde der Stadt Hallein.
Im Halleiner Bergwerk wurde bereits vor rund 2.500 Jahren von den Kelten Salz abgebaut. Dank diesem großen Salzvorkommen im Dürrnberg konnte Fürsterzbischof Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau die barocke Residenzstadt Salzburg aufbauen. Besonderheiten in diesem Bergwerk sind zwei lange Bergmannsrutschen, eine Fahrt mit der Grubenbahn, eine unterirdische Floßfahrt auf einem Salzsee und ein Keltendorf übertage.

The salt mine is located in the Hallein Tennengauer district capital and was previously known as a salt mine in Hallein. The new name was chosen to highlight the location of the mine in the Land Salzburg and its significance for the town and to boost the mining tourism. Bad Dürrenberg is a cadastral district of the town of Hallein.
In Hall One of mine was already reduced from about 2,500 years ago by the Celtic salt. Thanks to this great salt deposits could Dürrenberg Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau build the baroque residence of Salzburg. Special features in this mine is two long mountain 'slide, a ride on the mine train, an underground river rafting on a salt lake and a Celtic village above ground.
