Sylvanus Phillips Thompson (1851 - 1916) was a York born Professor of Physics, who attended Bootham School, and then started his teaching career there.

Bootham school is a independent Quaker run school and had a strong background in science. In 1853, just 2 years after Sylvanus was born, the school became one the few in the country with their own observatory.
This proved to become a major influence on Sylavanus who in his later life specialised in the study of light and optics. He was also interested in electromagnetism. He took an early interest in Rontgen light, an example of which is X-Rays, and gave the first public demonstration of their use at the Clical Society of London.
He was known as a great public speaker who could explain in simple terms, complex scientific ideas. His book Calculus Made Easy was published in 1910 and is still in print to-day.
