The 22nd Indiana monument is a granite commemorative marker. The marker is tall with a pointed top, in the center is text detailing the brigade, division and corp the 22nd was part of. Centered above the text is the State of Indiana seal. A plaque on the rear of the monument describes the actions of the 22nd on September 20, 1863. The marker is mounted upon a two-block base of unfinished granite. A canteen and cartridge pouch are depicted just above the regiments name.

Marched from Steven’s Gap September 20th, guarding supply train off Lookout Mountain on left and rear of the enemy. Had slight skirmish at Chattanooga Creek but succeeded in getting trained with in the Union lines with laws of a few men and horses captured. Arrive at Crawfish Springs about 3 P.M., and took position with Calvary forces commanded by General Witchell, and marched from there about 5 P.M. same day, arriving in Chattanooga Valley at the foot of Lookout Mountain about 8 P.M.
