1808 ordnete Erzherzog Johann zum bevorstehenden Kampf gegen Napoleon an, das Kanaltal zu sichern. Eine Talsperre wurde auf einem Felsrücken, dem so genannten Tschalawaj, in 850m Höhe zwischen Malborgeth und Uggowitz errichtet. Mit der Ausführung und der Bauaufsicht wurde Hauptmann Friedrich Hensel vom Ingenieur-Korps betraut. Am 17. Mai 1809 fiel die Sperranlage, nach langem aussichtslosem Kampf, in die Hände der Franzosen. Alle Verteidiger starben den Heldentod und ihnen zu Ehren wurde ein Denkmal errichtet. Ein paar Jahre später räumten die Franzosen die Festung. Im laufe der Zeit erfuhren die Befestigungsanlagen von Malborgeth wichtige bauliche Veränderungen und technische Verbesserungen. Durch den neuen Grenzverlauf und dem Bau der Eisenbahnanlage Udine-Villach erwies sich der Standort des erneuerten Werks als äußerst günstig.
Zur Erinnerung an die glorreiche, aufopfernde Verteidigung erhielt das Werk am 19. März 1882 den Namen "Werk Hensel". Es besteht aus dem unteren Kampfwerk B und dem höher gelegenen Werk A, das mit einer Poterne verbunden ist.
Die Decken der zwei Werke wurden mit zusätzlichen Betondecken und Steinquadern verstärkt. Trotz einer Teildesarmierung konnten die Italiener das Werk bei Kriegsausbruch nicht erobern und niederkämpfen.
Am zerstörernsten erwies sich die Beschießung durch zwei, in 12km Entfernung, bei Dogna aufgestellten 30,5cm Haubitzen.
