Easily overlooked if you didn't have an interest in milestones on this stretch of road of course.
This is one of a series of milestones scattered along this historic route. Originally, the Great North Road was not one single route, but a collection of local routes strung together. As a result it tends to meander somewhat. Here the milestone is located alongside a straight stretch of modern dual carriageway. Although I suspect that this is not exactly in it's original position, an 1882 Ordnance Survey map, shows this as a rather straight stretch, but does suggest that the milestone should be engraved "London 42. Baldock 5". Could this be a post-1882 replacement?
