Algona is brimming with WWII history as it shares the story of its prisoners of war camp. Camp Algona POW Museum, located at 114 S. Thorington Street, is filled with memorabilia that tells the three year chronicle of nearly 10,000 German POWs who resided here from 1944-1946. The museum includes weapons, uniforms, and a 70’ exhibit that tells the history of this camp and how it affected those living in Algona. Paintings, woodcarvings, and poetry have been preserved to demonstrate the cultural contributions of these prisoners. They also constructed 60 half sized nativity figures from plaster, wood and wire; they are housed at the Kossuth County Fairgrounds on the edge of town. While there are no buildings left from Camp Algona, the National Guard now stands on the original camp.
