Marker Text: Northern Paiutes, who call themselves “Nomo” or “The People”, have long occupied Steens Mountain.
The mountain, including places like Big Indian, were frequented by two Paiute bands, the Wada Toke (wada seed eaters) and their southern neighbors, the Tsosa’ odo twuviwarai (cold dwellers).
The Paiutes followed a seasonal round. During the spring, they broke winter camp along the Blitzen Valley, and progressed up the mountain. Summertime was spent gathering, hunting and fishing in Big Indian and other canyons. At the coming of fall, upon completing their seasonal round, they move to their winter grounds, near water at the lower elevations.
Today, the Northern Paiute still utilize the natural resources found within the area.
