Martin Fritz, listed as being a veteran of the Revolutionary War, was born in 1750 and died in 1844, according to his headstone.
The headstone also names him (but not his wife!) as the first white settler in Milton Township, in 1814.
A contributor to RootsWeb cited a passage in a local history, "Arise Wild Land" by Lindsey Williams, which included these additional details (some of them contradictory to the headstone) about Martin Fritz:
""MARTIN FRITZ was born in Alsace, France, 1751 and emigrated with his
brother sJohn to New York City in 1771. To pay his passage, Fritz
indentured himself for three years to a Mr. Ray and then moved to
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. When the Revolutionary War broke out
Fritz enlisted in Capt. Samuel Cochran's Company, 10th Battalion
Militia, as a private first class. After the war he located in
Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, where he married CATHERINE WILT in
1790 before moving on to Venango County. He seems a typical
frontiersman, always moving west ahead of the crowd."
