The coordinates are the south stairs leading to the walkway on the Hawthorne Bridge. The Hawthorne Bridge was built in 1910 to replace the original wooden Madison Street Bridge, which was destroyed by fire in 1902. The Hawthorne is the oldest operating vertical lift bridge (a bridge that moves up in a horizontal position) in the United States. It has two steel towers with enormously heavy concrete counterweights that are used for lifting the bridge at each end of the lift span.
