The Oklahoma Railway Museum, located at 3400 N.E. Grand Blvd.is a wonderful place to spent some time, looking at all the restored railroad equipment. You can also plan a child's birthday party in the party caboose, or come at certain times during the month when excursion rides are available.
This is an outdoor museum, with walkways leading from various displays. Walk over to the Station and see the depot. This is a typical one-story frame Kansas City, Mexico & Orient Railway (KCM&O) depot, built in 1905, which served the town of Oakwood, OK for many years. It was purchased by the Museum in December 2000 and serves as the ticket office for the excursion rides, as well as a gift shop where you can purchase a variety of railroad-related items.
A plaque on the depot tells its history and reads:
"The Oakwood depot was constructed by the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient Railway line in 1905 at Oakwood, Oklahoma Territory. The Santa Fe Railway leased the Orient line in 1929 and operated the station until 1958. In later years it was acquired by the Dewey County Historical Society and moved to a property just west of Watonga, Oklahoma. The depot was purchased by the Oklahoma Railway Museum and moved to the present location in 2000 and completely restored."
The museum is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:00-5:00. Visit their website at the Oklahoma Railway Museum for details of public train rides, event planning and equipment inventory.
Many thanks to the Oklahoma Railway Museum for their kindness and assistance with documentation.
