The war memorial was originally erected in remembrance of the first world war and was unveiled on 11th November 1924 by the Earl of Derby. It stands outside Bury Parish Church in the old market square.
The memorial is made of Portland Stone and in the centre has a cross of sacrifice. Flanking the cross are 2 bronze panels celebrating those who contributed to the success in the war.
The left hand panel depicts members of the army, the navy and the air force together with a nurse. The right hand panel depicts civilian occupations including miners, engineers, carpenters and munition workers.
Sir Reginald Blomfield was the architect and Hermon Cawthra was the sculptor.
After the second world war the dates 1939 and 1945 were added.
