A rich heiress, Marion Grove (Rosemary Leach), meets a con man, Robert Carne (Ray Barrett), whose wife died in suspicious circumstances. Despite warnings by DCI David Keen, Marion agrees to marry Carne and to finance his business. Carne suggests to Marion that they go away from the formality of Marion’s impressive house to a cottage in the country. On the way to the cottage the couple call at a lawyer’s office to fix a financial transfer from Marion to Carne. At the cottage Carne fixes the cooker so that when the timer goes there will be a short circuit in the cooker that will result in a fire. Marion’s drink is spiked with sleeping pills and she collapses on the floor by the cooker. Carne goes to the local pub to provide himself with an alibi whilst the timer ticks. The fire starts, but fortunately Marion is rescued by DCI Keen’s intervention.
The pub where Carne establishes his alibi is the former Star public house on the Causeway, Furneux Pelham. The house is now a private house. On the opposite side of the road is the house that was used as the local police station.
