The railway station in the quarter St. Johann was built in the early 1840s and it looks like there had been minor passenger traffic in the 19th century, but the documents are not very clear in this point.

For a long time it used to be a minor freight station at the line between Basel SNCF and the French border. In 1997 the French part of the Basel commuter train system to Mulhouse opened and there had been plans from beginning to make this station a part of that, but the French customs did not allow a Swiss stop between the French border and Basel SNCF, which can be considered a French exclave in Switzerland from a customs point of view. So St. Johann remained a ghost station until 2009, when a new customs treaty between Switzerland and France allowed to open the station for passenger traffic. Since September 2009 St. Johann is a stop of the line S1. The station is property of Swiss SBB and the trains are operated by French TER Alsace.
