The summit on the Desert Road at 1074m, on the main highway SH1 running through the centre of the North Island, marks the boundary between Taupo District and Ruapehu District.
Sometimes snow covered in winter, it is often cold with views of Mt Ruapehu on one side and the Kaimanawa Ranges on the other. Surrounding nearby land is pumice sand and tussock wasteland known as the Rangipo Desert.
Further along the highway is the Army land where the boys in uniform play with their toys.
