The sign reads:
"Compared to a rocky outcropping or pier piling, where animals can find a firm attachment, sand dwlling animals must contend with a constantly shifting environment. Relatively few species are found in this unstable environment. Common to the beaches of Santa Barbara are active burrowers such as sand crabs, popular bait with fishermen, and bloodworms, a favorite shorebird food. Shorebirds also probe for beach hoppers, whose burrows may be noticed as small holes in the sand. In addition, countless microscopic organisms, invisible to the naked eye, live between the shifting sand grains."
