The memorial is to the 143 men and boys killed by an explosion in Swaithe Main Colliery on 6th December 1875. It is situated in front of and in the grounds of St.Thomas and St.James church in Worsborough, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The memorial can be clearly seen from the main road and there are no parking restrictions in this area. There are various carvings on the memorial depicting mining tools and equipment.
The dedication panel reads-
ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION TO THE MEMORY OF
THE 143 MEN AND BOYS WHO WERE KILLED BY
AN EXPLOSION IN SWAITHE MAIN COLLIERY
ON DECEMBER 6 1875
