Wasilla's First School
Built In 1917
Built in 1917, Wasilla's first school was funded by the Alaska Territorial Department of Education. Ora Dee Clark was the first teacher. The school was originally located across the alley from the present 'old elementary school', built in 1934 and enlarged in 1955.
Due to overcrowding in newer school buildings down through the years, the first building was seldom free of Wasilla school children on weekdays. For many years, it was used as a church on weekends and evenings.
In 1979, Harold and Pat Newcomb donated the building to the Wasilla-Knik-Willow Creek Historical Society, and it was restored by that group and the Y.A.C.C. workers. It is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places
