53. SOLDIERS AND SAILORS MONUMENT, in the triangle formed by Delaware Ave., W. 14th, and N. Broom Sts., is a tall marble column in memory of Delaware's dead in the Civil War. The shaft is one of the columns of the Pennsylvania Bank Building, Philadelphia, razed in 1868. Sale of this monument was threatened by the sheriff after its unveiling in 1871 because a construction debt remained unpaid. Eli Crozier, known as "We The People" from his newspaper nom-de-plume, came to the rescue and raised sufficient money to release the monument.

Today the monument can be found on a triangular block surrounded by Delaware Avenue, 14th Street and North Broom Street. Parking is available on Delaware Avenue.
