Originally opened in 1871 as the Soldiers Home Cemetery to serve the adjacent Soldiers Home. The cemetery was renamed in 1937 to honor Gen. George Wood, a longtime member of the Soldiers’ Home’s Board of Managers. The cemetery became a national cemetery in 1973. The cemetery currently has 37,661 interments and is closed to new interments.

The cemetery has a 60-foot Civil War Soldiers and Sailors monument placed in 1903 when the cemetery was part of the Northwest Branch Asylum for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. The memorial was sponsored by the Soldiers and Sailors Association.
