For those that grew up in Tempe, Selleh will also have a significant meaning. For decades, Selleh Sporting Goods was where everyone shopped for PE clothes, letterman jackets and other equipment. The proprietor of that fine establishment and the namesake for the park are one in the same, Joe Selleh. In honor of his community involvement, Tempe dedicated Selleh Park in April, 1972 to stand as a memory to his many contributions.

Mr. Selleh, a long-time Tempe resident, was a significant contributor to the quality of life that many Tempe residents have enjoyed for decades. A native of Beaumont, Texas, Mr. Selleh came to Tempe in 1928 to play baseball in the now defunct Texas League. After completing his professional career, Mr. Selleh attended Arizona State College to complete his education.

After college, Joe decided to settle in Tempe and during his residency; Mr. Selleh maintained a keen interest in providing quality activities and opportunities for youth. As a member of the City’s Parks and Recreation Board, he was instrumental in gaining support for the construction of the City’s first municipal golf course, Rolling Hills. In later years, he helped found the first Boys and Girls Club in Tempe and was state commissioner for American Legion Baseball. As an active member with the American Legion, Tempe Rotary Club and Tempe Elks Lodge, Mr. Selleh was always championing for the youth in the community.

His tireless contributions and service to Tempe’s youth resulted in many programs, facilities and services still enjoyed by Tempeans to this day. In addition, ASU Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium, and the Tempe Union High School District Joe Selleh Award for outstanding athleticism have honored his legacy by naming prestigious facilities and awards in memory of his commitment to community.
