Methodists first met in a school in Willis during the mid 1870's. Present sanctuary was begun in 1877 and completed in 1879. The bell for the steeple was given by an early pioneer citizen, Capt. T. W. Smith. The pews and chancel rail made by cabinetmaker E. A. Anderson.
In 1966, the First Methodist Church was named as a recorded Texas Historic Landmark by the Texas State Historical Survey Committee with the placing of a medallion and plaque on the building. In 1989 it was designated an historic United Methodist site.
At 9 AM Sunday mornings, a traditional worship service is held in the sanctuary with its original Chancel Rail and pews still being held together with wooden pegs.
