Built by the local Masonic Lodge, who were quite active in providing educational opportunities for the region's youth, The Moscow Male and Female Academy first opened its doors in 1853. Under the tutelage of Professor Marcellus Winston, the school, also known as the Moscow Masonic Male and Female Academy, attracted a wide range of students after the Civil War, including many who came quite a distance to secure a quality education.
Its students became important businessmen of the day, noted jurists, and one student, William Pettus Hobby, rose to become the Governor of Texas. Eventually it merged with the public school system, but in 1935 its end came when it was destroyed by a fire.
Today all that remains is a low wall around two sides of the property and two brick based concrete steps with landings that were the entrances to the school.
Information for the above from: nearby historical markers and Texas historical Association and Texasescapes websites.
