Painted barn quilts are starting to appear on the countryside in Sioux County, IA in the far northwest corner of the state. Located on County Highway K64 a few miles north of Orange City, this large red and black pinwheel seems to spin across its bright yellow background. This wonderful piece of art is on the front of a picturesque wooden horse barn; it is found on the west side of the road and faces east.
While barn quilts are relatively new in this part of the state, it appears that it is becoming a popular art form, and we look forward to spotting many more in our area in the near future.
Your Visit: I pass by here occasionally and never noticed the barn quilts on this road until the other day. I have been searching for the documented ones in other Iowa counties, but never realized there were some in my own neighborhood. Now I’m constantly alert for this fascinating country artwork.
Type of Barn: Barn still in use
