Ryszard Siwiec Polish accountant, teacher and former Home Army soldier who was the first person to commit suicide by self-immolation in protest against the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia.
Czechoslovakia was occupied by Warsaw Pact troops and tanks in 1968. Czechoslovakia remained occupied until 1990.
The occupation was preceded by a brief period called "Prague Spring".
The Prague Spring (Czech: Prazske jaro) was a period of political liberalization in Czechoslovakia during the era of its domination by the Soviet Union after World War II.
The Prague Spring reforms were an attempt to grant additional rights to the citizens in an act of partial decentralization of the economy and democratization.
