The town of Stung Treng (various English language spellings abound, and the precise pronunciation is difficult for westerners) is the capital of the Cambodian province of the same name. It lies approximately 250 kms to the north east of Phnom Penh.
To convey folk across the Mekong to the neighbouring village of Thalla (13.5484n 105.955e), approximately 2.5kms to the north west, is a ferry service. This service operates continuously during the daylight hours. It only halts when, during the wet season, the Mekong is a little too wild. The boat is small, maybe 10m long, and has a very noisy motor. If you make this journey expect to share your journey with the locals, some local livestock, boxes, motor bikes, and any other physical item which can be squeezed onto the boat. The trip takes approximately 20 minutes.
Google maps (2010) shows a bridge across the river, there is no bridge, though there is a Chinese government constructed bridge further east, outside the town. The boat has no dining room or gift shop.
