About the building.
There are
two plaques on the outside brick wall of the library. One reads:
Marie Fleche Memorial Library Presented to the Borough of Berlin bu Lucien P. Fleche; Dedicated May 10, 1957; Board of Trustees - Honorary Members Lucien P. Fleche, Esther B. Jaggard; Charles C. Duffin, Helen R. Brown, William M. Matthews, Anna Duncan, Lewis P. Orchard and Warren Stafford."
The other plaque reads: "In Memoriam; To our beloved friend, the founder and donor, of this library; LUCIEN P. FLECHE Jan. 16, 1902 - July 7, 1968 - From his grateful friends in recognition of his outstanding service to this community.
If you visit the website, you will see they have countless activities for the community and endless programs to engage and encourage younger readers. There is also a donor walkway out front and the website reminds the locals they too can add to this walkway to help support the library. The site says, "Donations to complete the furnishing and decorating of the Computer Reading Room would be appreciated by the Library.
A memorial donation would provide an excellent way to honor and remember departed family members or friends."
The building itself is in line with the other structures which line the White Horse Pike: simple, brick, one to two story, nicely landscaped close to the tree-lined road.
The Marie Fleche Memorial Library in Berlin is offering a
$1000 scholarship to an accredited four-year college for a
Berlin Borough high school graduate. The trustees of
the library and fundraising activities of the library volunteers
provide the scholarship. This award, which is named in L.P.Fleche's honor, will be based on class standing as well as school and community activities.
About the Namesake.
Marie Fleche, an earlier immigrant from France herself, was the aunt of Lucien P. Fleche, a restauranteur and former owner of Lucien's Tavern in Berlin, NJ. Lucien donated the library to the Borough of Berlin for educational purposes in memory of his aunt after her death.
