This petrified log is one example of a series of large blocks of rocks from various locations, which are on display around the USGS Campus in Menlo Park. There is a self-guided tour of the campus available at the visitor center.
Text of Sign: “This petrified log was collected west of Rawhide, Nevada from Tertiary Volcanogenic sediments of probable Miocene age (5-12 million years ago). Tree rings indicate that the coniferous tree lived for about 180 years.”
