The neighborhood of Testaccio was known to be the "emporium" during ancient Rome times, where food and beverages were stored in pottery vases and containers.

The remnants of these vases, in broken pieces, were discarded on a mound that has now the name "Monte di Testaccio".

The fountain is a single vase, pouring water from a spout on its edge.

It was built in 1931 by the architect Raffaele De Vico.
The vase is marble from Vicenza of color coral red.
