The railroad track from Lahti to Heinola was built in the early 30’s and the work was completed in 1932 with the opening of the massive railroad bridge over river Kymijoki. The opening ceremony was conducted by the president of the republic, P.E.Svinhuvud. The railroad was used for many decades by both passenger and freight trains. In 1968, however, regular passenger traffic was discontinued. Nowadays an increasing amount of cargo is transported on rubber wheels and the future of the Heinola railroad is uncertain. The are no imminent plans to close the railroad, but the old bridge needs maintenance and repairs in the coming years and the Finnish Rail Administration has stated that it may not have sufficient funds for it.
