The courthouse was originally built in 1895. Information added to the cornerstone indicates it was rebuilt in 1940 under the WPA.

"The Johnson County courthouse, in Wrightsville, was built in 1895 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built of masonry in the Romanesque Revival/Colonial Revival style. The courthouse was later rebuilt by the Works Progress Administration in 1940."

Johnson County's first courthouse was a wooden structure built in 1859. It is unclear how long that building was used. The county's present courthouse was built in 1895 (see photo). It was remodeled in 1938, at which time the clock tower was reduced in size and substantially altered. A major restoration of the courthouse was completed in 1996."
