There were Jewish cemeteries in Basel in the 13th century, but they were destroyed and are not very well documented.

The current Jewish community of Basel was established in 1805. For almost one century the Jewish cemetery of Hegenheim (France) was used. In 1902/1903 it was possible to acquire a property in the West of the city just at the border to France and receive the consent of the local authorities. The cemetery opened in August 1903 was was extended several times since then. Currently there is place for 4800 graves, about 3700 are used.
