The Gloucester Arms was one of four pubs on Nightingale Road. The pubs were originally called The Leicester Railway Inn, The Railway Junction, The Gloucester Arms and the Woolpack.
The name of the pub is based around the popular song which features Molly Malone, a beautiful fishmonger of Dublin. There is little or no historical evidence to suggest that there was a specific Molly Malone that inspired the song, despite the Dublin Millennium Commission adopting one Molly Malone who died on 13th June 1699 as the “real” Molly Malone. The song itself was only published in 1883 in Cambridge Massachusetts and in 1884 in London. The London publication of the song was a reprint of an earlier edition published in Edinburgh, implying that the song originated in Scotland not Dublin.
