The city is located just 10 minutes west of Sioux Falls, off Exit 387 or Exit 390 on Interstate 90. The population is about 2200. There is a volunteer fire department, law enforcement, churches, civic organizations, schools parks, an 18-hole golf course, a swimming pool, and other amenities.
The territory of Dakota was organized in 1861, and the Minnehaha County was established in 1862. In 1867 the boundary line for Hartford was surveyed and subdivided.
