This museum is located in the first building of a Dominican convent of 1274. The convent was closed in 1557 after the reformation, the nuns had to move out and buildings were used for secular purposes. In 1860 most of the other buildings were teared down to build a caserne, only the oldest one of the buildings was preserved. The building was renovated in the 1930s and turned into a museum and the headquarter of the local heritage preservation department. In 1996 there was a re-organization and some of the exhibits were exchanged between the museum of history and this one and the name changed from "Stadt- und Münstermuseum" to "Museum Kleines Klingental".
The museum has three main parts. It has the original sculptures and statues from the Münster (cathedral) that were replaced with copies to preserve them from decay in the 19th century. There are several original rooms of a medieval convent including kitchen, refectories, cells and a herb garden. The third part is model of the city in the 17th century in the scale 1:400. It was created by Alfred Peter from 1952 to 1959 based on plans by Matthäus Merian from 1615.
There are also regular special exhibitions and the museum can be rented for special events.
