The 17th staging of the World Cup was the first held in Asia, and the first to be hosted by two countries - Korea and Japan in 2001. Host to several World Cup games, this stadium now serves as home to the Daejeon Citizen soccer team.

Daejeon World Cup Stadium was built specifically to host games of the 17th FIFA World Cup co-hosted with Japan. After the games it replaced the older sports stadium and become home to the newly formed professional Daejeon Citizen soccer team.
It has a seating capacity of 40,535 and measures 105 meters x 68 meters, and features a retractable roof. There is a capacity of 1,757 parking places.
It is a landmark on National Highway 1, and easily accessed from IC-251 at the Yuseong Exit, immediately adjacent to the stadium on the north edge of Daejeon Metropolitan City.
