Powdermills is an old gunpowder manufacturing factory that flourished between 1844 and the late 1890s. It ceased working largely due to the invention of dynamite. The factory was built here in an isolated location, due to reducing the risk to life and property in an accidental explosion, land was easily available and the facilities could be spread out across the hillside so that if there was an accident at one mill the chances of damage to the other mills were reduced. Plentiful supplies of building materials and water for powering the mills were also readily available.
