Utica Square is a village-like shopping center which opened on May 22, 1952. It was Tulsa's first suburban shopping center, and its finest. Located at 21st Street and Utica Avenue, Utica Square is designed as a small village with streets and curbside parking. The stores include many of the town's most exclusive.
When Helmerich & Payne purchased the shopping center in 1964, they embarked on a plan to improve the surroundings and planted more than 300 trees. Today, it is as well known for its trees and landscaped gardens as it is for its shopping.
This wood carving typifies the atmosphere of Utica Square. A Turn of the Century lady in her upswept hair-do, her parasol, hat, and floor-length dress add to the village atmosphere. This is a slightly larger than lifesize wood carving and quite a joy to see. It stands on the corner outside Bath & Body Works. The artist is Clayton Coss.
