The Municipal Auditorium located at 400 N. Bell Street was built in 1936 and has been a center of Shawnee community activity for decades. This is a huge auditorium where sporting events, concerts, dances and conventions are held.
As you enter the impressive front entrance into a large lobby, you are taken aback by a huge and colorful mural on the north wall of the lobby. It shows the auditorium as it looked back in 1936, and shows people arriving in their vehicles and walking into the auditorium. The clothing and vehicles shown reflect the active days gone by at this location.
The front doors of the lobby were open when we visited, and since the Shawnee Senior Center is located in the same building, and manages the auditorium's use, it is assumed this mural is available for viewing during the Senior Center's hours of Mon-Fri, 8-5.
