Description from the Smithsonian Art Inventory:
"Atop a tall square shaft a Civil War soldier stands at parade rest, holding his rifle in front of him, butt to the ground. His proper right leg rests against a stump behind him, and his proper left foot is slightly forward. He wears a Confederate uniform and hat. A sack is slung across his proper right shoulder. The shaft rests a three-tiered base. At one time, four cannonballs were installed atop each corner of one of the tiers five feet above the ground, but they are now missing."
