This park was originally surplus land, owned by the state of Oregon, and reserved for use by the adjacent Oregon State Penitentiary. The city and state have since agreed that expansion of the prison in the heart of town is not optimal, so the land was declared surplus. In 2006 Salem purchased the land, and laid out two baseball and two soccer fields. This field is east of the smaller field, with longer home run distances, larger foul territory, and it faces northeast (the "traditional" direction). The lights which were vetoed by the local residential group. Both fields are kept to a very high standard of maintenance.
