Durham is a small town, known primarily as the location of the main campus of The University of New Hampshire. But it is a town rich in history, and nowhere is that history more evident than in the area near where Route 108 crosses the Oyster River. Hidden among the various historical markers, monuments and buildings is a small plaque permanently attached to a century-old dripstone embedded in the ground on a grassy hill.
The following words written appear on the plaque:
"Beneath this dripstone from the former Marston House the people of Durham on May 31, 1976 deposited a vault to be opened on this nation's tri-centennial in 2076."
