Construction was started up by the architect Philip Terzi in 1588 under orders of Cardinal Albert, viceroy under Philip II (I of Portugal).
The initial plan consisted of two forts, one on the mainland and another island in the peach (or rock the horse as it was known then) and an artificial breakwater that would allow the channel to be used as an artificial harbor.
In 1590 the buildings are to be directed by Alexandre Massay and remain so until 1598 when it must pass to build a strong defense to bar the Mira river in Vila Nova de Milfontes. The buildings continue intermittently until 1690, when the main fort is completed. However the strong wall of the island and are never completed.
Peach Island has been occupied since the third century BC by the Carthaginians. In the first century BC the Romans occupied it by building a port in which there are still traces. Progressively its importance as a port city was decaying and was used as a center for salting fish. To visit these traces and ruins of the fort unfinished look at this link. (Thanks clerks).
In 1755 the earthquake damages parts of the fort. Between 1877 and 1942 the Fiscal Guard used the same as the base.
Can still be seen in the south of the fort remains of artificial construction of the wall in big cuts in the stone.
------------
(Obrigado caixeiros).
