Leopold Wackarž (1810-1901) joined the Vyšší Brod monastery in 1833 and in 1857 he was elected an abbot. During his rule the monastery flourished: many buildings were repaired and a pilgrimage chapel Maria Rast am Stein was built. He was also active in the town community: founded the local Agriculture and Forestry Chamber, was a member of the district school council and supported founding of several schools in the area. In 1891 he was elected the General Abbot of Cistercian Order.
