He was born in 1853 and his real name was Emil Frída. The pseudonym - Vrchlický - he chose just according the place, where is now the titled memorial - Vrchlice valley (údolí Vrchlice). His relief engraved here a few years after his death (1912) local teacher J. Chvojna.
His best ballads "Legenda o svatém Prokopu" (1879, Legend of the St. Procopius)and "Zlomky epopeje" (1886, Peasant Ballads) are on nationalistic and patriotic themes. Vrchlický, a poetic virtuoso, produced nearly 85 volumes of lyric verse, much of which is sensual and affirmative. In his narrative poetry he introduced numerous foreign trends, being greatly influenced by his teacher Victor Hugo and several French and Italian poets. A scholar of great erudition, Vrchlický translated poetry from many languages. His literary influence was great, and a school of young poets formed around him. He taught world literature at Charles Univ. in Prague.
