The city of El Dorado Springs developed due to the mineral springs that were found here by settlers about 1881. (The springs, however, had been used prior to the beginning of the city, as the Osage Indians have brought their sick to be healed in the waters before the discovery of the springs by the white settlers.) The waters from the springs have been shipped all over the world for their "medicinal" uses.

A pioneer family by the name of Hightowers learned about the medicinal powers of the iron spring from John A. Jackson, a farmer who lived not far from the springs. Joshua and Carmelia Hightowers were passing thru this area after leaving their home in Vernon County, intending to relocate to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, a move they where making for Carmelia's health. The Hightowers had stopped in the area of the springs to allow Carmelia some time to rest before continuing, but they remained for two weeks when she found her health improving from the effects of the spring water. When they packed up, instead of continuing on to Arkansas, the Hightowers returned to Vernon County and spread the word about the medicinal properties of the spring. In time, the city of El Dorado developed at the site, and the spring is now located in the El Dorado city park.
