The Appalachian Trail (AT) is roughly 2,179 miles across 14 states stretching from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Maine. Over 10,000 people have registered as completing the entire distance. Thru-hiking requires around six months with 80+% heading northbound in March or April, 10% heading southbound starting July, and rest flip-flopping by starting in middle and switching direction later. Around one in four make it to the other end. Another very popular way to complete the entire trail is hiking a section at a time, thus taking several years to finish. Current rate for all route options is that around 600 folks report completion each year.
