When the city of Beavercreek, OH celebrated its 25th Anniversary, in 2006, the city commissioned 25 beaver statues to be placed throughout the city. The statues depicted various aspects about the city, including the popular Creekside Bike Trail depicted in the photograph.
During the celebration, a popular pastime erupted which involved stealing the statues and placing them at various places throughout the town. For example, one turned up in a local pond. The “illegal” pastime resulted in one man being convicted of stealing and being ordered to guard the 25 statues. Eventually, tracking devices were installed on the beavers in an effort to curb the rash of thefts.
After the 25th anniversary celebration, some of the statues were auctioned off to local businesses, schools, and individuals. Some can be seen in front of schools, dentist offices, the bike trails, etc.
