An historical marker in the park reads as follows: "Townsend Park. Named in memory of Mayor John Townsend 1829-1830 and 1832. Prominent banker and public servant. Erected by Albany Tricentennial Committee 1986."
According to Wikipedia: "On November 20, 1833 the council voted to name a park at the intersection of Washington Avenue and the Bowery (Central Ave) "Townsend Park" in honor of the then former mayor."
There are two nice memorials within this small park: one for the Spanish-American War and another in memory of the men and women of the 10th Ward who served their country in time of war.
