Tranquility was originally known as Kennedytown, after for Amos Kennedy a farmer who settled here. When the location for the Tranquility Methodist Church was being debated, some factions wanted it to be in Allamuchy Township and others wanted it to be in Kennedytown. As a compromise a spot was chosen halfway between the two points and in honor of the agreement the church was named Tranquility. Kennedytown eventually took the church's name as its own and Tranquility is part of Green Township.
The congregation was organized about 1836 and the current sanctuary was erected in 1870. Before it was built at this location, the congregation built an earlier church upon the foundation of an old Quaker meeting house in Allamuchy, which still stands today.
