The Green Man is often said to be a representation of Robin Hood. On these occasions he may look like a woodsman wielding an axe and usually dressed similarly to the Richard Greene portrayal of the country's best known outlaw as is the case here.

However, many will look to the pagan personification of nature for the inspiration for this sign. Green Men are often portrayed with leaves or shoots growing from the mouth and ears. His hair is usually greenery also.
